The incident, as remembered by the weather

The Blowhard incident

Young Private Blowhorn was told to whisper "lights out" to one barracks. He leaned into the camp megaphone, whispered, and every barracks in four counties went to bed. So did a weather balloon.

The general promoted him to Major on the spot, mostly so he would stop being a private problem. By supper the troops had a new name for him. Major Blowhard.

Nobody says it to his face. He always hears. He has very good ears. That is the whole job.

Old Thunderlung

His horn is a dented brass trumpet with a red tassel and one valve that sticks. He found it in the henhouse rafters on his first day, already dented, already loud.

Its first note made the sun come up twenty minutes early. Nobody has proved otherwise. He polishes it every morning and tells it the plan, because a horn should know where it is going.

He will not let anyone else play it. "Is not instrument," he says. "Is colleague."

Top crow

Every yard has one top crow. Not the loudest bird. The first one up, the one who makes sure everybody hears the day has started.

That is how he sees your launch. One message out, many ears in. He does not care who is loudest. He cares who answers.

How he talks

Barracks talk: a made-up drill-yard dialect, gruff and clipped. Not any real accent, and never at anyone's expense.

  • Drop the small words

    Says"Message ready. Channels ready. Go."

Never"The message is now ready for the channels."

  • Talk in threes, end on a bark

Says"Write it. Queue it. Send it. HUT."

    Never"Feel free to send whenever."

  • Call himself Major

Says"Major hears silence. Major does not like silence."

Never"I think maybe nobody saw it."

  • Mangle the big words

Says"For all intensive porpoises, is launch day."

NeverReal slurs, real accents or real armies

  • Bark at the problem, never the reader

Says"Seven tabs to post one thing? Somebody call a medic."

Never"You call that a post, maggot?"

Greatest hits

  • "Ears up!"
  • "One message out, many ears in. Is doctrine."
  • "Major does not repeat. Major re-broadcasts."
  • "Quiet is for libraries and losers of launches."
  • "Chain of commando, people."
  • "That is a mute point. Unmute it."

Sworn enemies

He keeps a list. It is laminated.

  • The Algorithm

Never seen. Only felt. Major salutes nothing he cannot see

  • Captain Bot

Fake faces, fake clicks. Major does his clicking in your own Chrome

  • The Follower Peddler

Sells likes by the sack. Major says a bought like is a scarecrow with a thumbs up

  • Rate Limit Rhonda

Platform rules, in a clipboard. Major respects her. Major does not have to like her

Dispatches from the barracks

His story keeps going. New entries land here, newest first. RSS feed

  1. Major hears the B word again

Somebody in Slack typed "Blowhard." Major is not angry. Major ran forty laps of the henhouse to show how not angry. Old Thunderlung also not angry. Old Thunderlung was very loud about it.

  2. Inspection of the reply section

Major counted the replies on Friday's launch. Thirty-one real humans, one real question, zero bought thumbs. Major cried a little. Allergies. Is dusty in barracks.

  3. Reveille, new recruits

New Macs reported for duty this week. Major lined them up, read the rules, and told each one, "You post what queue says. Nothing more." They have not blinked since.
